How to Construct Step Shelves

Under the Left Panel controls, enter your intended shelf depth (e.g., 0.6 meters for shallow water lilies) and click "Draw New Terrace". Trace inside your main pond perimeter across the exact regions where the ledge will sit.

Why Don't Step Shelves Drastically Increase Liner Size?

A common intuitive assumption among builders is believing that carving a 0.6m wide shelf around the pond interior requires buying an extra 1.2m (2 × 0.6m) of overall liner dimensions. Mathematically, this is untrue:

  • Shelves reside inside the footprint: Because terraces are excavated inside the outer perimeter outline you drew on screen, their horizontal width is already accounted for in the overall top-down bounding sheet measurements!
  • No change in cross-section span: Replacing straight vertical drops with stepped horizontal benches simply breaks the vertical depth and horizontal span into staggered steps without stretching the outer sheet envelope.
  • Tuck & Pleat Buffer Allowance: Our engine automatically inserts an intelligent safety buffer of 0.20m (~8 inches) per distinct shelf level specifically to provide fold-and-tuck slack into 90-degree internal corner benches without membrane tension or bridging!

1. Edge Overlap, Overhang & Decorative Edging Allowances

Our calculation engine incorporates standard geometric estimation buffers, including an interior shelf pleat allowance and a baseline edge anchor overlap (0.3m per side). However, our automated calculations DO NOT take into factor any additional custom overhangs, extra exterior apron flaps, waterfall spillway wrapping, deep anchor stone trenches, or decorative rock collars that you may intend to build around the water feature perimeter.

If your installation requires wide decorative overhanging flagstones, planted edging baskets, or elevated boulders that clamp down onto extended liner flap sheeting, you MUST manually calculate and add extra sheet length and width to our recommended estimates prior to purchasing your liner!
